Unstable Future for Indian Students in Canada Post Immigration Changes | Outrage in Streets

Indian students in Canada are experiencing a wave of uncertainty following abrupt changes in immigration policy, prompting them to stage rallies of dissent. These students, left in a precarious situation, stage protests in Prince Edward Island (PEI) region's streets against what they view as a fickleness in governmental procedure that denies them work permits post-graduation, threatening their residence in Canada.

In July 2021, PEI passed a law confining postgraduate work permits only to specific sectors: construction, home-building, and healthcare. So, as it stands, hundreds of students pursuing different industries like retail sales and service may not have their work permits extended, leading to a cease of their work rights in Canada once their current permit expires.

Moreover, in February, the PEI government further tightened their immigration criteria by restricting the number of people it nominates for permanent residency in Canada via the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). As per the new policy, nominee numbers will see a 25% reduction in 2024 due to pressure on PEI's healthcare system and housing market.

Caught up in an unfavourable whirlwind of policy changes, the students are protesting for an extension of their work permits and a reconsideration of the newly implemented immigration regulations. Their demand seeks a way to be 'grandfathered', a status offering exemption from new regulations based on their previous status or circumstances, thereby providing stability and assurance for their future in the foreign land.

The upheaval caused by these sudden policy shifts is causing unrest among the student community, with threats of a hunger strike if their demands remain unmet by mid-May.

As it stands, the students' future hangs in limbo as they await a positive resolution to their plight. The situation calls for a comprehensive review of immigration policies, as well as a more consistent approach to ensure the interests of the international student community are safeguarded.
